I started early this AM helping with the East Fork CBC. I thought slow
Numbers and species wise, but since this was my first time helping
On this count, I don't have much to compare with. Rarest species for
Us was maybe a Chipping Sparrow. I missed that oneā€¦.. will have to get
My own January chipping eventually!

Hardly any waterfowl. At the time I just attributed that to the warm temps.
Waterfowl moved on maybe. Just as I was leaving the area, I get a text -
65 Greater white fronted geese at a pond in Butler county. Wow! I had to
See that! I like numbers. That was special. Had Hooded Mergs,
Common Mergs, Goldeneyes, also, but no Canvasback. I got to thinking again
About waterfowl. I wonder now if the lack of numbers at East Fork was due
To hunting? The birds know where it is safe. There's no hunting in Butler
County - at least those suburban areas. Lots of hunters around East Fork.

I am only 2 days into my Butler big year - and already am enjoying the Great
Miami River spots. This goose pond being one of them. The birds are using
The river for movement.

Good birding all.
