Minutes of OAIRP Conference
March 13, 200
Embassy Suites, Columbus, Ohio

The first meeting of the Ohio Association for Institutional Research and
Planning (OAIRP) was definitely a success. There were 57 persons in
attendance at the Embassy Suites for the day-long meeting.

Dr. John Milam from the University of Virginia gave a most informative
presentation titled "A Vision of IR for Y2K." He focused on Knowledge
Management , the power of data, using new tools and access to data which is
unprecedented.

The business meeting topics were as follows:

It was brought to the attention of the membership that the suggested change
to Article III, Membership and Dues Item l of the Constitution had not been
changed in accordance with the vote of the membership last fall. Jie Wu
has corrected this error on the version that is available on the OAIRP
website.

No election of officers was necessary as those elected last fall will
continue to serve until the fall 2000 meeting.

The membership list which was available at the meeting consisted of those
individuals confirmed and paid for 1999-2000. Members are asked to contact
Pat Detzel ([log in to unmask]) for changes to the list.

Parts of the OAIRP website are still under construction. If you have a
website and want it to be linked to the OAIRP site, please contact Jie Wu
([log in to unmask]).

Bill Knight, President, thanked all who attended, Larry Hunter for a
yoeman's job of organizing the conference, Jie Wu for putting the website
up and maintaining it, Becky Geltz for her financial oversight and Denise
Krallman for representing OAIRP at the national AIR Forum in May.

This listserv is maintained at Miami University and is managed by Denise
Krallman. It's address will be changed to OAIRP soon.

Michael O'Connor gave a final OCCUP report. Ending balance of funds is
$5,013.11. Becky Geltz reported on funds in OAIRP at the present time.
That balance is $6,306.48 with expenses from the spring conference not yet
deducted. The OAIRP had to cover the cost of one room at the Embassy
Suites as we had only 7 of the 8 required used for the overnight. The two
accounts will be merged for a total balance of approximately $11,000 once
expenses have been covered.

There was discussion about having an audit group drawn from the membership
of OAIRP. Becky agreed to work on this. It would only be two or three
people who would review the financial statements periodically.

The financial reports were approved with no dissensions.

There was discussion about the fee structure so that it was clear to all
the membership. The $50 membership covers both meetings and membership.
$35 is the charge for one conference only. Some members have problems with
this combination of fees and it was decided that we would have a separate
notation on the form for conference registration and one for membership
fee. It was also agreed to strike the word "individual" in front of
membership from the fall form.

There was discussion, but no resolution, about where we might hold future
meetings. This continued in the meeting of the executive committee.
Possible dates of October 20 and October 27 were selected for the fall
meeting. Committee members will be calling to check hotel rates and will
ask about the requirement to reserve a certain number of rooms along with
the reservation of a meeting space. There was also general discussion
around the idea of meeting at colleges in and around Columbus before trying
to meet in other parts of the state. Another idea which surfaced after the
Monday meeting was to meet at a state park. Please contact Bill Knight
([log in to unmask]) if you have other ideas you would like to share.
Also contact Bill with ideas you may have for possible speakers/program
themes for the fall meeting.

Larry Hunter reported on plans for the IPEDS Workshop in July. It will
take place July 20 and 21 at the Walcom Center (www.walcom.com). There
will be a $75 charge for the two day workshop which includes breakfast and
lunch both days as well as a manual. Larry indicated that site volunteers
were needed - no special IPEDS knowledge required. There will be two
tracks of approximately 48 people each. There is a registration form on
the OAIRP website (http://www.bgsu.edu/organizations/oairp/).

Becky Geltz suggested that OAIRP develop some form of recognition for
members. This could be in the form of a certificate or a pin (or other
ideas you may have). Members approved of this recognition and suggested
that Becky look into possibilities and costs.

Denise Krallman asked for volunteers to sign up to work at the registration
desk, be a "floater" or provide other sorts of assistance such as stuffing
packets on Friday for the Cincinnati AIR Forum in May. She also invited
the membership to attend the NEAR in Pittsburgh November 4-7.

The afternoon sessions following lunch included sector meetings, concurrent
sessions (follow-up with John Milam or "Surviving and Benefiting From and
IR PRogram Review" with Bill Knight).

Rob Sheehan ended the meeting by explaining developments in the HEI System
and details of the proposed governor's higher education performance report.

The conference dismissed at 3:40.
