April 19, 2001
Dormitory Fire
San Diego State University
San Diego, California
A fire in a nine-story residence hall sent five people to the hospital. The
fire started on the sixth floor, and the room's two occupants were found
unconscious either in the room or in the hallway. The fire was believed to
have been started when a mattress was ignited by smoking materials.
Evidence of cigarettes, drug paraphernalia and marijuana were found in the
room. Smoking is not permitted in the building. Damage was confined to the
room of origin.
It was reported that there had been a number of prior false alarms in the
building.
