We borrowed a Roscoe fog machine from the theater department on
campus. It did a great job of smoking the hallways and stairwell but
we did find that the fogging fluid made smooth surfaces like tile
floors and steps rather slippery. We also found that people tried to
go down stairways that were completely filled with the smoke/fog even
though they couldn't see where they were going. We became concerned
about people falling and had to put someone in that stairwell to turn
them around.

I've also used Roscoe fog machines during fire department search and
rescue training and was very impressed with their ability to quickly
fill a single family house with smoke.
