For an upcoming issue of Campus Firewatch I am looking for information on
two campus policies that I'm hoping everyone could help me with.

1) What is your policy on candles in dormitories?
 a) Do you ban them outright?
At the Univesity of Utah we have banned the use of candles in
Residence Halls.

 b) Do you ban them, but make allowances for
religious purposes?

We have not had any requests for allowances for religious purposes.
Our posistion would be to find a safe location and make that area
available to the requesting group.

 c) If you do make allowances,
are there special requirements that the student must meet before
using them?

If we were to nmake an allowance, a fire watch, would be required and
the building would have to meet current building and fire code
requirements. In addition it would be in a facility that is fully
detected and has a complete suppression system.

 2) What is your
policy on Halogen lamps in dormitories?

Halogen lamps are permitted at the University of Utah. Student and
professional staff are trained on the hazards of these lights and as
Resident advisors see them they talk with students to verify they
understand the need to place these lights in safe locations.
