Dear Colleague,
I write in the hope that you will consider mentioning the Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism at the University of Western Ontario to prospective graduate students who might have an interest in pursuing study on theory at the graduate level.
The Centre is a lively community whose smaller size allows for more interaction between students and supervisors and among students themselves. It has a significant Visiting Speaker series that attracts top theorists from around the world and regularly sponsors or co-sponsors major international conferences (last year’s featured Catherine Malabou). Our students organize a series of “Theory Sessions” at which students present their work every two weeks, and run a scholarly journal, Chiasma.
Research and teaching at the Centre focus on work that is on or involves (among other things) deconstruction, post-structuralism, social and political thought, Marxism, gender theory, visual culture, media theory, continental philosophy, Indigenous knowledge, and 18th and 19th-century history of thought. We are also interested in how knowledge is organised, in the emergence of disciplines and fields, and in questions that arise at the borders between disciplines and discourses.
An unusual feature of our MA is that it is a two-year, thesis-based programme, an experience that students who go on to a PhD, whether here or elsewhere, find extremely valuable and formative. The Centre’s PhD programme, like the MA, provides students with a strong and versatile preparation for work in both interdisciplinary fields and in traditional disciplines. Both programmes offer competitive funding packages. The application deadline is January 15.
We are of course always happy to provide additional information and to answer questions at [log in to unmask]
                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                    Jan Plug
                                                                                    Director
