I saw a note from someone (in the FLING) saying one thing they don't
like about the calendar integration is having separate calendars for
portal, lms, etc.

This is actually a really good point, and should underline a
requirement for the portal: iCal support to allowing calendar sharing
and syncing.

If I understand right, Sakai can be configured to export a calendar in
iCal already.

So in theory, if portal also supports ical, then:

Sakai Calendar can sync to portal calendar
portal calendar can sync to Google Calendar
