 Perhaps some basic research could be done before signing on, but it appears from this Wall-Street.com article that the US overlooked his MSA-affiliated protests during the hostage crisis in 1980, and approved his sabbatical visa in the '90s, so he is a victim of post-9/11 anti-terrorist measures:

Johns Hopkins has potentially life-saving treatment, and there are humanitarian visas for these matters, in addition to family reunification avenues.
