Subject: Freedom Summer workshop in June

Dear Colleagues:

We would like to share with you that on June 22-26, 2009 there will be a workshop about Freedom Summer offered on the Oxford campus.  "Learning from the past to empower the future: Creating Curriculum for Civic Engagement & Social Activism" will enable participants to access primary resources about Freedom Summer available in the Western College archives (http://westernarchives.lib.muohio.edu). Facilitated by archivist Jacky Johnson, this workshop is focused on teachers developing lesson plans using archival resources relevant to their subject specialties and grade levels.  Guest experts will include civil rights historian Nishani Frazier and Urban Teacher Cohort Director Tammy Schwartz. Special activities include a field excursion to the Rankin House and John Parker House and availability of multimedia tools needed to create digital learning materials. If you know of teachers or anyone else interested in this pivotal time in history and its relevance for contemporary society please refer them to the attached brochure or contact Jacky Johnson ([log in to unmask]).
