Good day!
Here is some of the top news of higher education from the past
week:
* TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY AT COLLEGE STATION violated a dozen
safety and security rules for research on dangerous
microbes, federal officials say. The government says it
will continue its two-month-old suspension of such studies
at the university until the problems are fixed.

* RITA SANDERS GEIER, who filed a lawsuit in 1968 accusing
Tennessee of perpetuating a dual system of higher education
for black and white students, is going to work for the
University of Tennessee at Knoxville to help further its
efforts to diversify.

* NORMAN G. FINKELSTEIN and officials of DePaul University
clashed on several occasions this summer after the
controversial assistant professor of political science lost
his bid for tenure, according to internal university
memoranda obtained by The Chronicle.

* A HARD-HITTING REPORT by a state panel on last spring's
massacre at Virginia Tech could lead colleges nationwide to
consider whether to adopt new policies dealing with security,
emergency preparedness, and mental-health issues,
higher-education experts say.

* SOME 35,000 COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS from Louisiana
and Mississippi did not return to their campuses last fall,
