From: Ann Bainbridge Frymier, Associate Dean of the Graduate School
Date: November 26, 2012
Subject: Graduate School Academic Achievement Assistantships
The attached materials describe the procedures for the stipend supplement program designed to help increase our competitiveness for highly qualified applicants to the Graduate School. This is one effort to strengthen our recruiting of well-qualified graduate students. The Graduate School Academic Achievement Assistantships (AAA) are one-year non-service stipend supplements of $2,500 for applicants to master's programs, and $5,000 for applicants to doctoral programs (whether entering at the masters or doctoral level). If students are officially entering as masters students but the department views them as doctoral students, please note this in your nomination letter.

Departments and programs may nominate up to four (4) applicants of high quality, one (1) of whom must be a domestic minority. If you do not have a domestic minority candidate, you may nominate only three (3) applicants. It is expected that nominees will represent the top 5-10% of applicants to the Graduate School from across our graduate programs. Preference is given to applicants whose undergraduate degree is from an institution other than Miami University.

Nominations must reach the Graduate School by 5:00 pm on February 6, 2013, for round one review, and March 6, 2013, for round two review. The two rounds are to accommodate the departments with February 1st and March 1st deadlines. Nominations must be accompanied by copies of materials normally reviewed by departments in selecting applicants for admission and financial aid. In addition, nominations must include a letter of support from the department chair or director of graduate study that addresses the quality and character of the nominee's academic and professional accomplishments in the context of current and recent applicants to the program. This letter should also address why an Academic Achievement Assistantship is needed to recruit this student. Nominees must also be recommended for a Graduate Assistant or Teaching Associate position. See guidelines for complete instructions on submitting your nominations.

You may participate in both rounds of competition; however, the total nominations cannot exceed the numbers stated above.

The Academic Achievement Assistantship Graduate Council sub-committee will recommend award recipients.
