      NOTE: Diane Rehm has been away from the show to recuperate from
laryngitis. At this time we expect her to return sometime  during the week
of May 4.

      10-11: Open Phones: The phone lines are open for listeners to share
their questions and comments about the issues of their  choice.
 
      11-12: Christine Brennan: Sportswriter Christine Brennan's book "Edge
of Glory" (Scribner) is an inside look at the world of figure  skating. The
book includes coverage of the 1998 Winter Olympics competition in Nagano,
Japan and its "showdown" between  teenage skaters Michelle Kwan and Tara
Lipinski.

      Actor PETER COYOTE. He's written a memoir, "Sleeping Where I Fall"
(Counterpoint) about the his experiences during the sixties  and seventies.
The son of an East Coast stockbroker, COYOTE was part of the political
street theatre, the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Later COYOTE lived the
communal life, experimenting with sex, drugs, and heady ideals. COYOTE has
performed in more  than 50 films including, "Bitter Moon," "E.T.," "Jagged
Edge, "Outrageous Fortune" and the new film "Sphere."

      ANY ANIMAL LOVER AND DOG OWNER WOULD NOT DENY THE VALUE OF CANINES
SIMPLY AS COMPANIONS, BUT MANY DOGS ARE TRAINED TO PERFORM HIGHLY SKILLED
FUNCTIONS THAT HUMANS OFTEN CAN'T. A PANEL OF GUESTS TALK ABOUT HOW DOGS
ARE TRAINED FOR USE BY LAW ENFORCEMENT, EMERGENCY RESCUE OPERATIONS AND IN
THERAPEUTIC SETTINGS TO MAKE  HUMAN LIVES SAFER AND RICHER.
