the Clinton Administration as head of the Office of Management and
Budget, where he presided over the first successful attempt to
balance the budget. Today, as chairman and CEO of Fannie Mae, he is
the first African American to head a Fortune 500 company. Mr. Raines
joins Diane to talk about his life and work.

Botany of Desire." It's the story of how humans have bred plants to
suit our needs and tastes, particularly marijuana and the genetically
engineered potato.

the Senate this week thanks to Vermont Senator James Jeffords who
left the GOP to be an Independent. Political experts and members of
congress talk about the change of power in the Senate and what it
means for the future of President Bush's legislative agenda.
        Hour Two: MIDDLE EAST UPDATE: Palestinian leader Yasser
Arafat has called for a cease-fire after a Palestiniansuicide bomber
killed more than twenty Israelis in Tel Aviv. A conversation with
Middle East experts about the future of Israeli-Palestinian peace.

All Things Considered (4pm - 7pm)
        In 1928, a Mississippi musician wrote and recorded song about
his hometown called Avalon Blues. Decades later it was rediscovered,
and "Mississippi" John Hurt became a 1960's hit at folk festivals and
coffee houses. His music still inspires musicians today. A new
tribute features a wide variety of artists from Taj Mahal to John
Hiatt
