The leaning tower of Pisa. It leaned a bit too much and in
1990, on the verge of collapse, it was closed to visitors. It
re-opened this summer. Engineer John Burland devised a way to save
the tower. He'll tell us how he did it.
NOTE: Todd Mundt moves to a NEW day, beginning Thursday September 6th.
The Diane Rehm Show (10am - Noon); guest host Laura Knoy
Hour one: Ralph Nader: Former Green Party presidential
candidate Ralph Nader talks about his latest projects and his views
on third-party politics, the new Administration, and other topics.
Hour two: Cheri Register: With Labor Day coming up, writer
and teacher Cheri Register tells the story of a meatpackers' strike
that divided her Minnesota hometown when she was growing up in the
1950's. In her memoir, "Packinghouse Daughter" (Harper Perennial),
she combines her own memories of the strike with historical research.
Fresh Air with Terry Gross (Noon - 1pm)

Talk of the Nation with Juan Williams (2pm - 4pm)
Hour one: WHO ARE THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF? President Bush
has nominated a new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It's an
institution that's been criticized for lacking innovation. Can that
be changed? And how important is the Joint Chiefs of Staff?
Hour two: DOG PARKS: There's a trend in America of building
parks exclusively for dogs. Should scarce urban green space be used
just for man's best friend? Some people say no.
All Things Considered (4pm - 7pm)
Olin College is a brand new school outside Boston, trying to
attract top-notch engineering students. The assignment to this first
class of freshmen: design the new campus. It's an approach that gives
the students a chance to learn skills by working on a real-life
project.
