Job Type: full-time temporary position

Opportunity location: Columbus metro and surrounding area

Closing date (if specified): No date specified

Opportunity Description:

The positions (4-6) run March 31-August 15, 2008 (20 weeks), flexible end date. We are investigating the responses of birds to the effects of urbanization within riparian forest fragments throughout Columbus, OH and the surrounding area. Technicians will nest-search for Northern Cardinals and Acadian Flycatchers and other common bird species, identify and spot-map birds, mammals, and reptiles, resight color-banded birds, set digital camera traps, set up and maintain remote video monitoring of nests, radio-track fledglings, sample forest vegetation, and enter data; target-banding of passerines may also occur. This is an excellent opportunity for persons desiring to gain experience conducting a wide range of wildlife survey techniques and having an interest in the effects of urbanization on wildlife. Ability and willingness to learn wildlife and vegetation identification skills, to work alone in the outdoors for long hours under variable conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, mosquitoes), and to carry 20-40lbs of equipment in the field is required. Previous field experience with birds and other wildlife is recommended but not required. B.S. or work towards a college degree in biological sciences, valid driver’s license, personal vehicle, and willingness to use that vehicle for some project work is required. Some transportation will be provided to and from field sites. Pay is $7.50/hr (Approx. $1300/month at 40 hr/wk, plus possible overtime opportunities.) Work week is Monday-Saturday, variable hours. Housing is not provided, but many affordable short-term leases are available near Ohio State's campus.
