I knew that Dave, an ornithologist and entomologist, would be excited about
this coming summer. I remember from 1987 in Indiana, where I lived at the
time, there being large differences from area to area in the densities.
Some areas were so thick that you couldn't take one step without crushing
two or three. I'm sorry, I know this really isn't about birds, I just can't
believe how awesome it is that an animal can lie in the ground for
seventeen years and have a good enough biological clock to emerge within a
week or two of when the rest of its population does. And to think, there's
a transit of Venus this summer in June also. I do have an interesting bird
observation to make; we had 64 brown headed cowbirds at one time at our
feeders this weekend. And sadly not a Cooper's hawk in sight. They seem to
be taking over. Eric
