Michael,

Here's what I tell my students: the comma in the MC ([,] or [ ]) SC
pattern is optional. Its use depends on whether or not the writer wants
the end of the main clause to receive focus (if yes, use the comma). It's
about he only case where I tell them they can trust their ear.
