Pam's book is really quite wonderful. Sorry I didn't think to mention it.
Hurrah for structuring language arts around the difference between talk and
writing.
My apologies to Bob if I overreacted to the last message addressed to me. I
really don't see the fruitfulness of trying to convince one another either
to abandon the 'tools' we have found most useful or to take up ones that
have not been useful to us. We arrive by our own inquiries and commitments
at different views of language -- that seems just about inevitable in the
U.S. today.
