At LSU we prohibit the use of halogen lamps in sleeping rooms and are for the
first time this year are banning the use of candles in dorm rooms altogether. We
have had more than one fire result from candles in the dorms in the past several
years. Fortunately, they were confined to the room and the general area of the
candles, but the potential for far more damage was there. Interestingly enough
one fire was caused by an adult chaperon who was accompanying a group of high
school kids in a program at the university. She was using the candle to mask the
odor of her cigarette smoke. Another was a resident assistant who left a candle
unattended and it caught the top of an aquarium on fire. The fire was
extinguished, but only after a lot of smoke damage to the room and to the
property of the resident.
