At Saint Michael's College in VT both candles and halogen lamps are
prohibited... this has also been applied to staff offices when it came to
attention of the electrician(s).

A survey of residential students in the mid-90's yielded
disappointing results- in spite of policy, some 60-70% of students used
candles anyways. As of last academic semester, fines were instituted and
assessed to several students by Res.Life- too many unattended (and burning)
candles found to frequently.

(As a followup to the listserve question a couple months ago about
practice evacuations vs. using real alarms as practice opportunities... I
brought the overwhelming response in favor of special practice evacuations
to my boss, and it sounds like that will be put into place in first-year
housing this year. Thanks for advertising the accepted practices.)
