  Randy,

This dorm fire has an unusual kind of origin. At least I hope it is
  unusual.

>The cramped dorm room has all the trappings of a stereotypical freshman's:
>mounds of dirty laundry, skateboards, snapshots of a bikini-clad girl and
>ritzy sports cars, a laptop computer, a half-empty bottle of Jack Daniels
>and a pouch of beef jerky. But studying, sleeping and socializing
>weren't the only activities going on in Room 416 in the south tower
>of the University of Denver's Centennial Hall. A fire broke out in
>the room shortly after 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, leading to the
>discovery of what investigators are calling a makeshift drug lab.
>University officials said it appears that a student was trying to
>extract hashish oil from marijuana, when flammable liquid ignited.
>The flames leapt from the windowsill to towels and bedding, filling
>the room with smoke that billowed outside and into the hallway. The
>student, 18-year-old Adam Gaffney of Vancouver, British
>Columbia, smashed a glass box containing a fire extinguisher and ran
>back into his room to put out the fire. He was treated for cuts and
>burns at Porter Hospital before being taken into police custody.
>Officers said they found marijuana, lab equipment and other drug
>paraphernalia inside Gaffney's room. "I'm sure the young man doesn't
>feel very lucky today, but he is luckier than he knows," DU
>spokesman Warren Smith said. "If someone else had been hurt or
>killed, . . this would be a very different story." The fire
>appeared to be part of a trend in the metro area.
>Investigators have uncovered more than 80 clandestine labs in the Denver
>area in the past three months, and Wednesday's blaze is the third one linked
>to drug manufacturing in just two weeks. The other fires were at a home in
>Golden and an apartment in Arapahoe County.
