        NPR will broadcast a LIVE call-in with Russian President
Vladimir Putin Thursday night. For the first time, a Russian leader
will converse directly with the American public by taking phone calls
from NPR member stations' listeners. Thursday night from 8 - 10 pm.

Diane is receiving another treatment for spasmodic dysphonia. We
expect that she will be away from the show until the week of November
19th.
        Hour one: Afghanistan Hunger Crisis: A panel describes the
conditions that threaten millions of Afghanistan civilians with
starvation, and how aid groups and the governments of the U.S. and
its allies are coping with conflicting political, military, and
humanitarian imperatives in the region.
        Hour two: Mario Vargas Llosa: Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas
Llosa presents "The Feast of the Goat," his newest book based on the
assassination of the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo in 196.

Fresh Air with Terry Gross (noon - 1pm)
        CNN's terrorism consultant, PETER BERGEN. His new book "Holy
War, Inc." is a biography of Osama bin Laden, and an explanation of
his global network.

Public Interest with Kojo Nnamdi (1pm - 2pm)
        Civil lawsuits happen every day. But a civil suit against a
foreign government is much more complicated. What happens when you
try to hold countries legally responsible for acts of terror. GUESTS:

        Hour two: ARLO GUTHRIE PERFORMANCE CHAT: Arlo Guthrie, the
iconoclastic folk singer and songwriter penned his signature song
"Alice's Restaurant" over 30 years ago.

All Things Considered (4pm - 7pm)
        The stir over student visas. Since September 11th, the United
States government has taken steps to tighten immigration policies.
Among the steps yet to come: closer scrutiny of international
students. People with visas to study in America may be tracked.
Advocates of the idea say it's a matter of national security. But
many school administrators worry that school employees may have to do
the tracking.

Monday on Interconnect with John Hingsbergen and Cheri Lawson
        Ramadan. Karen and Majed Dabdoub, a married Muslim couple,
discuss the Muslim holy season.
