Talmy Givon has developed a scale of irrealis that's worth looking at in this connection.  I don't have it here at home, but I'll send it off tomorrow.

	To check whether your native-speaker intuitions really call for 

	subjunctive in such cases, try 'be' -- would you say "It's important 

	that we be quiet" or "It's important that we are quiet"? 



	Do people avoid the issue by saying "It's important for us to be quiet"?
