You know, in my role as Exec Secretary, I rely on probably 20-30 ALSB
members who serve as my anchors an dtouchstones...members who privide me
with assistance with just an email's notice...people who are willing to
take on a task no matter how inconvenient but for the good of the
group.......Ray was one of those people.

Dear Colleagues,
I can't believe it--Ray August is gone? I am sitting here in a
student computer lab at the University of Turin, in Italy--in the
middle
of Europe that Ray knew so well and wrote about with great skill.
This
semester I am teaching a group of American and other students here. I
have just logged on to my Boise State account, and am now reading some
of the very sad news, and tributes to my/our friend and colleague.
I missed seeing all of you at the meeting in Ottowa--the first one
I've missed in 20 years. There were 2 basic reasons--(1) my wife was
just finishing 6 months of chemotherapy (colon cancer was discovered
in
January--she is doing well, and is here with me, but chemo is not
fun),
and (2) we were leaving for Italy a couple of days after the
conference.
So I didn't get to see Ray this time, but how many times he has
helped me and all of us, with his thoughtful and perceptive comments,
his tireless work with the ALSB, the Northwest region, and the
International section--all of which I am part of. My thoughts from
afar
are with Diana, and Ray's many, many friends. Best wishes, Michael
Bixby

I knew Ray almost from the time he began teaching in 1980. He was a
kind and gentle soul, in addition to being an excellent academic.

I know there will be more formal tributes coming later, but what a
loss
for Diana, for Ray's colleagues and students, and for all of us in the
ALSB. Ray was an exceptional human being, passionate about his
teaching
and his research, and generous with his time and energy. Back in the
late 1980s, he was one of the first of us to take on international
business law, and was instrumental in founding the international
section. Over the years, he remained a moving force in the growth of
our group.

Ray was a first-rate scholar, but even more so, a wonderful and wise
colleague. He had the rare ability to see the big picture in his
scholarship and in our profession. He also had a ready laugh and a
terrific sense of humor. He was one of the many ALSB people we all
see
once each year, yet count among our true friends. I'll miss him.

Regards,

Carolyn
