Language from NJ state college master agreement:
There shall be a Range Adjustment Program at each College/University where full-time faculty are employed. Full-time faculty members who meet or exceed the merit-based criteria established for range adjustments are eligible to be considered for and may apply for a range adjustment within rank. The merit-based criteria will be established by the College/University and published for the understanding of affected employees. The procedures for consideration will be negotiated between the College/University and the Local UNION. The procedures for consideration utilized in the College/University, if universally applicable, or in a division, department or similar unit in which the faculty member is employed, shall be fairly and equitably applied to all applicants and nominees. www.cnjsc.org

I am on the bargaining team for our union and we will be bargaining this
summer.
We have an (apparently) unique merit system. It is incorporated into the
bylaws of each department but basically it is a way for people who have
reached full professor to receive regular salary increases by continuing
to do research and writing, maintaining good teaching performance,
professional development, and also service. It is called 'salary
adjustment'.
I have attached a copy of our bylaws here in case you are interested.
And also a copy of our Faculty agreement (in pdf format).

Subject: pay for performance
I am a member of the collective bargaining team of my faculty union at
St. John's University. I was wondering if any of my colleagues at
unionized institutions were receiving annual salary increases based on a
"pay for performance" or "recognition pay" model rather than uniform
across the board salary increases for all faculty members. I hope this
is an appropriate topic for discussion. If it isn't, please disregard
this message. Thank you.
