     Thanks for the response. I guess my primary question relates to
the "public domain" materials. Gutenberg is a good source for literary
materials, but it does have a few essay-type works. The problem with
them is the dated style. Arizona, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina have
given me permission to use the students' writing in their state
assessment documents. Some of the Arizona and Pennsylvania texts are
already on the KISS site.
     What I was thinking of here was a multi-perspective discussion of
at least a few texts. Thus, for example, we could look at a set of
students' papers, such as those at:

You, and others working with you, might discuss them as writing models
in terms of general quality, organization, etc. A KISS analysis of their
syntax would be one component of the overall discussion.
