Hi, all ... sorry I couldn't make the conference this year. Sounds like
you all had a good one!
As to soliciting material for SIS, Bill McC. suggested taking programs
with you from conferences ... but of course conference programs are now
available online for most conferences; some also publish abstracts.
There are also several places that list conferences of interest to
different fields. I imagine NCTE lists conferences; I know LSA (Ling.
Soc. of America) does; you might check websites for any educational
prof'l associations that might do so.
As to developing SIS ... launching a "serious" journal is an
undertaking. There is pressure on academics to publish, but there is
also a certain amount of pressure to publish in publications with an
established reputation. One also has to have a pretty solid and
reliable editorial board for reviewing submissions. Making the names of
the board editors available helps people evaluate the journal as a
venue for publications (when reviewing someone for promotion, for
example). Given the costs of printing, etc., these days, and increased
reliance on the Internet, I think online publication is the best bet,
with perhaps a .pdf version that people can download or request
hardcopies of.
Whenever SIS comes up on the list, I think of Ed Vavra's lament: He
objected (still does?) to making the newsletter into a "serious"
journal; I think he wanted to keep it an open venue for teachers to
share ideas, etc. I wonder if there is a way to include both kinds of
material.
I think developing SIS is a great idea -- if we can sustain the needed
human infrastructure. (Ugh! What a horrible phrase! As bad as "human
resources".)
