María Martínez will talk on “The Struggle for Latino Recognition: The
University of Toledo in the 1970s” on Wednesday, October 19 at 8:00 p.m.
in the basement of Warfield Hall. Students, staff and faculty and
community members are invited to attend.
During the 1970s, María Martínez was a student at the University of
Toledo, and like many other Latina and Latino students she was concerned
about the lack of recognition and support. She joined MeCha, a Latino
student organization, and became involved in a fight for a minority
affairs office on campus.
Today María Martínez teaches language to elementary school students in a
program that has been recognized as one of the seven best in the nation,
and the very best in the Midwest.
Sponsored by: Latin American Studies Program, Women Studies Program,
Center for American and World Cultures, the Bishop Debate Society, ALAS
and Sigma Lambda Beta. This is a UniDiversity program offering.
