This Thursday and Friday, the Botany department will be hosting Dr.
Walter P. Carson, this year's Roger E. Wilson speaker. He will give the
annual Roger E. Wilson Lecture on "Time to get rid of Bambi and Smokey
Bear: New Challenges in Managing Forests in the 21st Century" at 7 PM
Thursday, Nov. 3rd in 128 Pearson Hall. This lecture is free to the
public. Immediately following the lecture, there will be a reception in
the Botany Conference Room, Pearson 314.
On Friday, Nov. 4, Dr. Carson will speak on " A field test of
competition and keystone predation theory using old-field
communities: can plant traits predict winners and losers" at 3 PM in 218
Pearson Hall. There will be a reception for Walter at 5 PM at the home
of Hank Stevens and Julie Gurinskas. All are invited to join in the
festivities. Directions are appended below.
Dr. Carson will be meeting with interested students and faculty on
Friday. Please contact Vicki Sandlin in the Botany office for
available times.
Dr. Carson, who is on the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, tests
ideas in community ecology that hone in on the mechanisms
generating community composition, coexistence, complexity, and the
maintenance of species diversity. His research includes projects testing
whether mammals and insects maintain tropical tree diversity in Panama
and Costa Rica, whether insects create Minnesota grasslands by
suppressing leafy forbs, and whether herbivory, seed predation, fire, or
forest structure are preventing widespread failure of oak regeneration
in the eastern deciduous forest. More information is available at

If you have any questions please contact Hank Stevens at
[log in to unmask] or 529-4206.
