I encourage ALAS members to attend this and help try to end discrimination
here at Miami and in Ohio. I hope to see you there!

I thought ALAS might be interested:

This Wednesday there will be a discussion about the upcoming forum with
Brinkman in 16 Upham at 8pm by Spectrum. In case you are unaware, Thomas
Brinkman is a Republican representative to the Ohio House of
Representatives and he is suing the university over the issue of domestic
partner benefits. He will be at Miami for a forum in the Heritage room at
8pm on Monday January 30th and this Wednesday'ss discussion is to help
ensure that those who would like to show solidarity visibly in opposition
to his lawsuit can do so. We will be providing Rainbow stickers and HRC
stickers* for the forum next week. Stickers will be distributed through
Leslie Morrow’s office in 25 MacMillan from Wednesday until the forum next
Monday.

I am inviting a variety of organizations to attend so that we can discuss
the issues, clear up any misunderstandings, and perhaps brainstorm for
important questions to ask Brinkman or his lawyer. I am also inviting Dan
Meyers (as an employee of the university to answer any questions about the
benefits) and Brad Bailey (from the College Republicans to talk for just a
couple of minutes at the beginning).

I hope that you are interested in promoting solidarity and consider this a
broader issue of civil rights and social justice issue even if you are
hesitant in showing support for the queer community itself. Please share
info about both this Wednesday’s discussion and next week’s forum with
members of your organization and anyone else you think would be interested
in participating.

There is also a link if you want to know more about the specifics about
Domestic Partner Benefits at Miami:

Sincerely,
Dan Parker,
Spectrum President

*The HRC (Human Rights Campaign) sticker is a much more neutral symbol for
those that wish to show solidarity but are uncomfortable with the
possibility of being identified as a member of the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) community.
