William,
Could you check the following registry setting on the machine?
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\iexplore.exe
That should be set to the path of IE on the system. For windows
updates, we attempt to launch IE as opposed to the default browser.
