I would like to bring to everyone's notice, if they are not already aware of
it, Virginia Tufte's 'Grammar as Style' (New York and Chicago: Holt,
Rinehart and Winston, 1971). Although this is not a textbook, I have found
it a wonderful book for helping the teacher to see the relation between
grammar and style, indeed rhetoric in general. The book is out of print,
but the author has recently done an equally excellent update which is now
available: 'Artful Sentences: Syntax as Style' (obtainable from Graphics
Press LLC, P.O. Box 430, Cheshire, Connecticut 06410). The books together
provide a treasure chest of examples carefully related to syntactical
features. One could hardly find two books that demonstrate so conclusively
the weakness of the case that learning about grammar contributes nothing to
improving writing.
