I made another quick loop south of Columbus in the on-and-off (mostly on) drizzle to Pickaway and northern Ross counties this afternoon. The GREAT EGRET was easily seen today below the Deer Creek dam. In the minute or two I was there it caught 3 small fish in the wooded margins of the river. Since it was raining, I really didn't look too carefully in the reservoir. Nothing new and exciting was noted, and , yes, the pelican is still there.
On over to Spencer Road (p78, 3A in the DeLorme) in Ross Co., the 2 ROSS'S GEESE and 4 (blue) Snow Geese put in an appearance just before 5:00. It has been suggested that these Ross's Geese are the same birds that were in the Deer Creek Reservoir last month, but I think they are possibly different birds. One of the Ross Ross's shows some signs of being a young bird with some dark streaking on the head. I looked at the photos I got of the Ross's at Deer Creek, and neither bird shows that. Of course it just might be some mud or something on that bird's head.
On the way back I hit the grasslands between the Pickaway Co. Airport and Charlie's Pond (Westfall Rd. in the DeLorme, p.68 2D) around 5:15 for the changing of the guards. I counted 6 Northern Harriers and 4 Short-eared Owls all up and flying around.
