I re-enabled the e1000 driver in /etc/modprobe.conf, ran a "depmod -a", 
and rebooted.  It no longer happens.  dmesg and ethtool both show the 
driver loading properly and the interfaces being ready.

I'm pretty sure it was a "kobject_register failed" with a short stack trace.
