Sorry everyone, this is a red herring (mostly). The person in question
actually failed once on AV out of date, did an update, went through the
checks again, and this time it complained on a custom check of ours looking
for a firewall. He assumed (and told me) that it was still failing on AV
updates as well.

What made this more plausible for me was that the agent AV reports on
systems running Onecare Live show version numbers for the AV product and
signatures, but no date for the signatures. However, the test does work
correctly, so apologies for wasting people's time
