Hi All:

First, sorry for the cross-listing. If you know any undergraduates looking for a unique, exciting and very interesting program, please let the know about this. The program will also work with students to make the experience a part of their current undergraduate program, including working with domestic exchange programs to allow the year of attendance and make the credits count toward their current program. If you want more detailed information, I would be happy to provide it. I highly recommend the program. Thanks for spreading the word.

Todd

THE WILDERNESS AND CIVILIZATION PROGRAM:

SPACES REMAIN, Apply Now!

A few spaces remain for the 2008-08 Wilderness and Civilization program. We are accepting applications and will review them as they are received. Wilderness and Civilization is an inspiring and demanding two-semester academic program at the University of Montana. Each year, a small group of students from around the country is immersed in the study of wildland conservation and the human-nature relationship though this program. Wilderness and Civilization combines the strengths of classroom and field learning, interactive classes, dedicated faculty, and applied learning through internships. The program offers students the opportunity to explore contemporary conservation debates, make connections between disciplines, and learn how to work for positive change. The interdisciplinary program features wilderness trips, experiential learning, and community engagement. Students complete the program with a minor in Wilderness Studies designed to complement any major.

The program begins with a 10-day backcountry trip in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and ends with a 10-day canoe float down the Wild and Scenic Missouri River. Shorter field trips include visits to Yellowstone National Park, the Yaak Valley, the Flathead Reservation, the Blackfoot Valley, the Swan, and more. Fieldwork emphasizes area ecology, conservation strategies, environmental politics, and local culture. Field trips engage students with the landowners, policy-makers, managers, and conservationists making key decisions on the very topics students explore in their campus coursework. The spring curriculum includes an internship that provides direct experience in an area of student interest. Program courses meet numerous general education requirements and count for up to four Honors College courses. The program is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors of any major.
