In the 1970's while in London, I purchased a barrister's wig and gown
and wear it to all university functions requiring "academic" regalia as
well as a few classes, although obviously this is regalia for London
barristers. (Also, it is NOT CHEAP). Faculty and student love it and
ask questions about it. It invariable gets me on the 6PM local news.

You could have a heck of a lot of fun -- pick a degree!! I always think
the Harvard guys look very elegant.
The, 'pick a degree' comment is only half in jest. On the few occasions
where I have needed a hood, the U can never find my esoteric regalia so
I get something that someone or other thinks is close (or my husband's
WSU MBA hood). When I was a kid, my Dad never could afford his regalia
so he would borrow it from the only other person in town with a
Cambridge phd -- who unfortunately was a good deal taller. I remember my
Mom hemming it each time and then unpicking at the end.
