Castalia pond was mostly Canada geese, with mallards, shovelers, and a couple of bufflehead. Castalia Hatchery had four bald eagles and a small flock of yellow-rumped warblers. Bacon Woods had a hermit thrush in the main woods and a red-shouldered hawk on a pole by the maintenance area at the top of the hill. With warblers and thrushes here, can spring be far behind? Don't answer that... Craig Caldwell Westlake49_8Feb201015:39: [log in to unmask] |

To Amy: I think (if I am not mistaken) that the post about visiting the "Up" and the Soo area referred to the UP (Upper Peninsula) and Sault Sainte Marie area of northern Michigan, and wasn't about birding in Ohio at all. As a new Ohioan, you wouldn't be expected to know that, but I agree, it would have been nice if the original e-mail was more clear.
Also, I agree with Ben Warner's assessment of the hawk ID question. I believe it is an immature Red-tailed, not a Red-shouldered, based on the white markings over the back and the brown banded tail.
