Just a follow up. I've determined the compatibility issue lies with
Windows Vista/Win7 64 bit computers running AVG V9, Agent 4.7.2.10 and
the WSUS check. Removing AVG resolves it, but AVG is popular here and I
suspect we have a number of clients (students in particular) running it.
So we back out - again!
