Actually, I hate that the spill has happened--but if it had to happen, better BEFORE they start more drilling than after. Maybe someone will re-think the wisdom of that recent decision.

We shall see about that. This was an unfortunate time for an oil spill disaster.

Since Exxon hasn't paid anything for the Valdez spill while earning about the same $9B it has set aside. So my guess is, BP will not be rushing to pay the Coast Guard's bill for the cleanup effort. I must be overtired and cynical today. Too bad we're going to have 'limited' drilling off the Florida coast soon.

The market went down about the same yesterday, presumably on the Greek news. Up again today. And the oil disaster suggests ??? whot? Oil prices go up? Oil prices go down? Is the US economy really affected by the oil spill? Money, employment goes into cleaning it up. Presumably BP pays, not the US treasury. Somehow, tho, BP will work it around until the US treasury pays. Florida is feeling smug about not letting this happen to the Florida economy. Louisiana has profted mightily by the offshore drilling and now is threatened with the predictable effects of permitting it.

Seems like a wash from the standpoint of the market.

Apropos of nothing, I looked at the news online this afternoon. The stock market rallies 122 points (Dow) while Greece is sinking in debt that might create economic turmoil all over Europe. Spain is not far behind Greece. Does Wall Street think we benefit from a meltdown of the euro? The gulf has to be set afire after an offshore rig explosion threatens to pour oil into the marshland ecosystem, while the approval of offshore drilling off Cape Cod is touted by the guy who fought the powers that be on the Cape and won. Does anyone connect the dots any more? Or are we just oblivious to how things are all connected?

Subject: Re: 2012 ALSB in KC

I wanted to return to the conversation about the 2012 KC conference for just a moment, especially the discussion of food.

As another native of Kansas City, I second Barbara's comments about Gates and Bryant's but must strongly endorse Jack Stack. Best bar-b-que there is - www.jackstack.com<http://www.jackstack.com>. As discussed, there's a Jack Stack on the Plaza http://www.jackstackbbq.com/jack-stack-barbecue-country-club-plaza/i/5/ and in the Union Station area - in the Freight House behind the station - http://www.jackstackbbq.com/jack-stack-barbecue-freight-house/i/12/ - fairly close to the Plaza as well (not walking distance, but interesting area). If we get more than one type of bar-b-que between the restaurants and at our ALSB events, no problem. There's always room for more bar-b-que.

And Stroud's fried chicken and chicken fried steak - http://www.stroudsrestaurant.com - wow. Stroud's has a location near the Plaza at Stroud's South - http://www.stroudsrestaurant.com/south.html.

I moved away from KC quite a while ago, and folks with stronger current ties will likely have even better recommendations for area restaurants, but thought I'd give you a returning native's perspective. Hope everyone's semester is winding down well.

Best,
Megan
