One more voice of thanks for a FABULOUS meeting: great speakers, great presentations, and truly an amazing hotel. If there were glitches, they were so well-hidden that I didn't see them. Janine, Dan and "Herron INc", Sherry: you outdid yourselves.
Now--re: NOLA. Carolyn and others have floated the idea of finding a service project that would take advantage of our lawyering skills, without actually require any of us to practice law without a license. Does anyone know anyone who might point us in a good direction when the conference is closer in time?

As I sit at at Boston Marriott,  I wanted to report that the entire Richmond conference was fabulous. I stayed until this morning when I flew up here. The banquet was spectacular, and after the banquet I was impressed that a large number of new comers were ensconced in the restaurant with a couple of veterans talking about how great it was to meet colleagues from around the country. All the newbies I chatted with loved the newcomer's lunch and the easy friendship offered by our members. The Jefferson hotel was spectacular, comparing well with the Four Seasons in Las Vegas that so many of you liked. Janine, Dan, Debbie, Mary and family did a great job once again of arranging a great ambiance, scrumptious food, and interesting side trips. I was particularly impressed with the St John's Episcopal Church tour where there was a reenactment of Patrick Henry's give me liberty or give me death speech and it's surrounding events... The actors portraying George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were particularly arresting. Actually the entire cast, including Rev. were terrific.

I offered my assistance to Connie in planning the activities for the 2011 New Orleans conference since I know the city so well. By all accounts, the newly-restored Roosevelt-Waldorf Astoria Hotel will be another stellar venue for us. I hope everyone will seriously consider coming to NOLA next August. NOLA has great history, food, tours, music, art galleries and specialty shops you don't find anywhere else. Two of my favorites are (1) a signature/memorabilia shop with an incredible inventory from records and clothes, to movie posters and books signed by the celebrities involved or the 'authors,' and (2) the Fred Elliott Gallery that specializes Chagalls and Picassos as well as more contemporary artists, all at reasonable price. NOLA desperately needs a good tourist trade to survive economically, and you contribute to it's post-Katrina renewal and come to a fun and enlightening meeting at the same time. Whether you want handmade wooden toys, antique miniature soldiers, centuries old etchings, feather boas for halloween, you will find tem there.  For those of you living in virtual caves, New Orleans is truly unique as a great party city, especially on Bourbon Street where drinks may be taken from  one establishmnet to another as you enjoy the variety of live music. I will be there at the beginning of September, so I will give you an update upon my return.

Unfortunately I am heading out early this year. A very, very good meeting and I entirely agree with Marsha. I had just been to a session at the AAA (accounting) before this meeting and with all that organization's large staff and high registration costs the organizational efforts would have embarrassed Dan. We are very fortunate. Further, I was tickled pink that a new colleague whom I encouraged to attend found this to be her academic home just as much as we all did. Thankyou to all who work so hard for the organization.

I just got home from Richmond and those of you unable to attend really missed out.  The hotel was fabulous!  As usual Dan (and Janine) oversaw a great program which ran smoothly.  They are already working hard on the New Orleans meeting next year.

Besides the papers and panels, the thing I enjoy most is seeing friends.  I have found that I really look forward to seeing them more so than the colleagues I taught with at my college. The ALSB is a true source of support for our discipline.  I hope that all of you will try to get to New Orleans next August.

Additionally, the SE Regional will be held in Charleston this fall and I invite you all to enjoy my wonderful hometown while meeting your old friends and meeting new ones. The conference is sure to be memorable.
