8:30-10:30am at Lake Erie, 72nd to Dike 14 (+ E 55th) saw thousands of
mergansers, and every one I saw was a red-breasted. Clouds of them kept
swarming the near shore to beyond the breakwall, then heading west. Heard
gunshots to the west, off and on, the entire time. I read that hunters can take up
to 5 mergansers a day, but no more than one hooded.
~4,000+ (guessing) red-breasted mergansers
6 hooded mergansers
40 horned grebes
One pied-billed grebe
24 coots
18 mallards
Over a hundred Canada geese
Didn't count gulls, but saw at least one Bonaparte's
