Athens area birders,
the deep freeze has waterfowl resort to open river water, so I checked several spots on the Hocking River this morning. At the Habitat House on West Union Street, the ice water lilies are back (floating round chunks of ice). There were 2 pairs of Hooded Mergansers, several Mallards, and around 200 Canada Geese that were hunkered down in the snow-blowing gales. While I was watching out of the car window, an adult Bald Eagle flew downstream, and another pair of ducks landed. I had to get out of the car to see that they were Common Goldeneye. They joined a single Red-breasted Merganser and some Mallards. Images at:

Good birding,
