I stopped at several spots around the north end of Hoover Reservoir Monday,
and had quite afew interesting summer residents. Water levels are still
abysmally high, so shorebird habitat is nil here. But interesting
landbirds almost made up for it. I stopped at Oxbow Island, Wiese Rd, the
Galena RR Bridge bikeway, and Areas M-N. Highlights included:
Broad-winged Hawks - an adult was being trailed by a calling juvenile at
Wiese Rd, so it's possible that these rare summer residents bred around the
north end of the reservoir
Osprey - lots around the north end of the reservoir, including 5 along
Wiese rd
Caspian Terns - 6 adults and 1 juvenile were perched on logs near the
Boardwalk
Gulls - few fishermen allowed a flock of 20 Ring-bills and 4 Herring to
accumulate on the Boardwalk
Red-headed Woodpeckers - appears to be a good year, with adults and
juveniles at several stops
Flycatchers - plenty of calling Pewees, but sill had calling Acadians at
Galena and Area N
Warblers - many Yellows still around the reservoir shore, but had
Prothonotaries at Oxbow and Area N
Grosbeaks - a female Rose-br.Grosbeak was along Wiese rd, while a juvenile
was at nearby Galena RR bridge
Orioles - had juvenile and female Baltimores at many locations
