Hi,

Finding fledgling Juncos starting on the 19th. Here in my yard on
Glidersleeve Mountain and then along the East Branch of the Chagrin River
on the 20th. We had been along the East Branch on the 19th so it may have
just been a day early. We went back to the East Branch area today and
while we did not see any fledglings did catch and band a juvenile male.

We know probable nest site of a male we banded in 2017 pretty well and had
set up close to this but across the service road on the 19th. Today we
first tried just the decoy and recorded song but on the other side of the
service road closer to the probable nest site. We got both the 2017 male
and an unbanded male following him. So we set up the mist net.

The banded male was very savvy and flew around the net several times. The
juvenile bird followed him around once. But then the banded male went over
the net from the opposite direction the juvenile bird did not swoop up and
was caught.

The measurements of this bird were the smallest of the 23 we have banded to
date.

This is the second time we have seen a juvenile male following the breeding
adult like this. We would still like to figure out how to net and band
females, but we seem to have a strategy that works with juvenile males.

Haans
