I visited Rocky Fork MetroPark to walk the Beech Woodlands loop, then hiked
around Walnut Ravine (Area S) and the Hoover Nature Trail on the southeast
shore of Hoover Reservoir. Still lots of residents singing in the morning,
only quieting as the afternoon heated up. Notables included:
Broad-winged hawk - an adult was calling along the Hoover Nature Trail.
Could they be nesting in this forest block?
Spotted Sandpiper - 1 was foraging in the spillway at Hoover Dam
Cuckoos - Yellow-bills were calling at every stop
Flycatchers - Pewees were widespread, but the only Acadians were in the
ravines at Area S and the Hoover Nature Trail
Vireos - Red-eyed were common, but Yellow-throateds were singing on the
Hoover Nature Trail and near the dam. The latter site also had Warbling
Vireos.
Swallows - Cliffs are still raising many young at the Hoover Dam colony
BrownThrashers - 2 pairs were along the Beech woodland loop at Rocky Fork;
another was at Area S, and a third was at the Jefferson Community Park
Warblers - Walnut Ravine in Area S of Hoover was the star, with a
Prothonotary pair, a calling Louisiana Waterthrush, 2 singing
Yellow-throateds, and a Common Yellowthroat
Chat - at least 1 was singing along the Beech Woodland trail loop at Rocky
Fork
Tanagers - a Scarlet was calling in Walnut Ravine, while a Summer was
singing along the Hoover Nature Trail
