I was looking at my photos I took of the Franklin’s Gull this morning including some flight shots and I was very surprised to see that the gull was catching cicadas in flight on and eating them on the wing! I didn’t see this through the camera while I was taking them so it wasn’t until I opened the photos on my computer that I realized what was going on. Pretty cool! Had no idea that gulls ate cicadas. Explains why its flight pattern was a bit erratic.
Another birder told me a Lesser Black-backed Gull had been seen at alum creek but I did not see it today.
