Bravo! Dan, I believe that your comments re:the PhD. committee are right on.
Let me add that J.D.'s are also required to pass a very rigorous,
comprehensive, standardized examination (the Bar) in order to "use"
our degree in practice.  I suppose that reflects some measure of
competence beyond the opinions of 3 or 4 academics.
