I am using a mac with

  I always use Zmodem and it works nicely. I call up 4999, get the
gandalf's attention with ';', use V1, and I get 1500-1680cps on standard
compressed files on my Amiga.
 
  Yes.. that's the solution.. get an Amiga and you can use Zmodem.
