Chances are you are out of quota.  At the $ prompt, type
 
$ show quota
 
(if you have more than what is allocated to you, you need to delete stuff)
 
Easiest things (IMHO) to delete are you *.tmp and *.jou stuff that is created
upon sending a mail message.
